Calcium and Lead Toxicity in Pregnancy

Lead is a well documented neurotoxin to the developing mind. In-utero exposure to lead causes reduced IQ, lower birth weight and reduced hand eye coordination. Lead is stored in maternal bone and is released during pregnancy.

A recent Article posted in the National Institute of Health's publication: Environmental Health Perspectives shows that intake of oral calcium supplements reduces fetal exposure to maternal blood lead by 15-20%. While this seems to be a good number, the infant is still exposed to 80-85% of maternal blood lead. Based on this research, oral calcium supplementation is not an ethical alternative to pre-conception chelation.

Chelation is a medical proceedure that reduces total body burden of toxic heavy metals such as Lead. Chelation can be administered only by a licensed physician.
